visual communication week

This week has been all about illustration and different sorts of visual communications. This is a topic of art I have never done before, but I have had a lot of fun.

We started this week by looking at text and using the photocopier to layer text and pattern creating piece inspired by a adjective- I chose careful, shy and itchy, this technique is good because it allows you to play with scale, using a photocopier is unpredictable.
CAREFUL- I think the repeated pattern in different scales worked well, however the unpredictable nature of using a photocopier meant I photocopied the wrong word over the patterns which is a limitation of this technique and for this piece does not some up the word I was trying to create.

SHY- Again on this piece I photocopied the wrong word over the piece, which meant the word I was trying to portray did not come through.

ITCHY- this I feel is the most successful piece, the composition works well because of the different areas of free space and busy patterned spaces. The use of the different marks and different medias works well, the tape triangles stand out

Also we have done some printmaking- inspired by a phrase we were given, mine was 'put your nose out of place'.

In this piece I chose to make stencils of the word joint however I placed the 'J' the right way on the plate so it printed backwards which is a limitation of this method.

I like the composition of this piece and how the nose in this print stands out as this is what I wanted to achieve.

the ink on my prints came out patchy and not smooth which is a limitation of this technique.

On Thursday we did sketching around Cambridge city centre, sketching from observation is so  satisfying and you can focus on what interested me rather than photos capture the whole scene.

These are some photos of my sketches I used a mix of media and did a mixture of sketches of people and of buildings.

I feel the most sucssessful sketches I did was with pen and coloured felt tip, working with pen is freeing as because you cannot rub out lines I was less  controlling with each piece

For these quick sketches of people I uses ink in a brush pen, this media creates a range of different width line which works well.
