Trace elements

Our latest project has been called trace elements. We had half term to begin  the project were we could start collecting inspiration and get ideas on how we wanted to progress with the theme.
In half term I went to Kenya where I did volunteer work in a school it was an amazing experience were I got to work with some wonderful people in a poor community this lead me to wanting to do my project on trace elements of people and the boundaries between rich and poor.

Our group painting 1 of the school buildings

this photo I took which shows the school we were working in- in a poor area and then in the distance the well off peoples modern buildings. (right)

I started by making colour pallets and doing drawings of useless- rubbish items the shapes and interesting patterns.
By looking at the work of Tim Oelman which was showing in the Alison Richard Building- Cambridge. I love the vibrant colours used and the complexity of the patterns used, by looking at the work of Oelman I got ideas of how to translate my patterns into pieces.

I tried out samples of weaving and stitching and tearing paper, here is a photo of my cyanotypes I used photocopies of my drawings on acetate on some of the pieces and twigs on the others. the pieces using twigs did not come out very well because the light could get round the twigs because they do not lay flat on the paper.

here is a photo of a larger piece using experimental drawing and stitching on a large piece of hessian fabric, I wanted to keep this piece quite experimental and with lots of different techniques combining and overlapping.
