Contemporay Wildlife

Our latest project has been to work on a entry for an art competition. I have chosen to entre the David Shephard Wildlife Foundation competition for contemporary wildlife.
As always I started by mind mapping my ideas around the topic- contemporary wildlife. Conservation and aspects of the animals life interested me so I knew this was an idea I wanted to look at further.
One of the first things I did was to draw animals, I went to Colchester zoo and then spent a day dong simple line drawings the best pieces of the day I feel were the rhinos and the elephants because I was able to capture the main details of the animals so had a lot of potential for a range of different techniques.
The work of Martin Senn inspired me to do wire drawings. Senn uses wire to create these heavily detailed wire structures I did drawings but because of I tried to keep the wire structures in 2D I felt it didn't have a lot of potential so I looked at type and how wire words could help me to portray the theme as I liked the use of text within my last project.
the wire words I felt worked well and although I still have to photograph them I feel they will create an interesting piece.
this is one of my words the photo is just taken on my phone but I really like the way the shadow is shown.
While doing this I also had a variety of textile experiments going on painting fabrics then using free machine embroidery to create abstract images of elephants. the different threads and range of marks gave an organic effect and I thought it had a lot of potential so wanted to try it on a larger scale.
but when I drew the elephant out I thought it wouldn't work as well as the smaller more abstract pieces so I decided to cut up the fabric and make a series
these are some images of some other pieces I created
I want the piece to be over the top of a map to give the sense of a migration which is what I was trying to portray
