Week 14- Finalising my ideas

I think my biggest weakness in this Final Major Project has been resolving my work, I have had a tendency to do a piece and then move on. At the beginning of a project this is a good attribute to have to keep a broad outlook on your topic, but in future projects I need to try to commit to one or even a couple of ideas a bit sooner.

This week has been about collating all of my work and ideas I have had over the course of this project. I feel that my most developed idea and the one with the most potential, is the webs trying to portray the intangible aspect of 'home'.

Many of the experiments I have done recently have used this idea that 'home' is not a place and is a multitude of things that have to be connected and brought together.
The book idea I felt was strong aesthetic due to the depth of the overlapping circles, but the book was really hard to work in.

To develop this idea I have chosen to combine this piece along with the wooden web I made in week 10, as I feel the wooden surrounds were easier to work on and therefore had a higher quality finish.

I have cut 9 400mm square pieces out of ply wood and I have used a jigsaw to cut concentric circles out.
This photo shows the pieces marked out where the holes are going to be where I am going to connect the thread. I have sanded the sides and put a clear coat of varnish onto the pieces.
I wanted to keep the wooden pieces natural and not take any focus away from the threads and words that will eventually be suspended within each circle.

So far on all the connection structures I have made I have threaded them up in quite an unorganised pattern, I wanted to try a more structured approach so I got some mount board and made a smaller version of what my wooden pieces will be like.
Using mount board proved quite difficult as it kept bending, but it gave me an idea of what this structured criss cross effect would be like.
I will not be using this approach on my actual pieces as I feel the threads are too close together and densely packed especially in the centre which will make it hard to look through and see the other webs behind.

Next week I will carry on with this piece and finalise any other work and mount my work ready for marking.
