Week 15- Final week
This week has been all about finalising everything, mounting the necessary pieces ready for the exhibition and hand in day next week.
I have marked out and drilled the holes into my 9 circles 180mm apart and have stained the wood to give it a better finish.
One key decision for this piece which I have had to made this week is about the colours used to connect the threads. I carried out a survey of what colours associated with 'home'. I got a mixed response but most people went for warm colours, I didn't want to use 9 different colours as I felt it would take focus away from the actual web, but neither did I just want to use one colour as the definition between the layers would be lost. finally I decided to use a tonal scale of one colour getting darker as the circles got smaller.
I have chosen to get a gradual change from white, creams, corals to brown at the back.
Another challenge this week came from how I was going to put words into the piece. I knew I wanted to use both jigsaw pieces and acetate like I did in my tester piece, but because the threads had to be more spaced out to allow you to see through the layers the words could not be weaved easily. I decided to cut the words down to have a minimal amount of acetate. then I stuck the words to the threads.
I have during the project explored many avenues but if I had longer I would like to develop the building block idea as I feel this has potential and look into how I could use sculpture and possibly more photography techniques.
Although I am overall happy with this piece I feel that it was pulled together quite rapidly if I was to do this project again I would start the refining of a piece a piece earlier.
I am looking forward to putting this piece up in the exhibition and hopefully getting the effect of the layers, and seeing what the overall effect is like.
Our exhibition EMERGE opens Tuesday at Changing Spaces Cambridge.
